Lot Essay

Goossens, loc. cit., describes the present picture as the only true mountain landscape by the artist then known; he dates it c.1604, pointing out that the composition is loosely related to that of a drawing of The Three Maries at the Tomb in the British Museum which he dates c.1601 (op. cit., 1977, p. 32, fig. 16)
