At least three other versions are known, in all of which the wood on the left is replaced by a rocky escarpment with additional cascades. A version dated 1624 and measuring 48 x 84cm. is in the Niedersächsische Landesgalerie, Hanover. A small unsigned version offered in these Rooms on 1 December 1978, lot 104, when described as on copper, may possibly be the panel sold at Sotheby's, 12 December 1984, lot 50. An even smaller version on copper with a standing shepherd in place of the piper at bottom left was sold in these Rooms, 23 May 1986, lot 99
