Lot Essay

We are grateful to Drs Charles Dumas for the attribution made on the basis of a photograph; he plans to illustrate it in his forthcoming publication on the la Fargue. Drs Dumas points out that in contrast to Jacob Elias's normal proceedure of executing paintings after drawings by his elder brother Paulus Constantijn, the present picture, datable c. 1770, derives from a composition by Jan ten Compe of about 1750 in the Historisch Museum, The Hague (C. Dumas, Haagse stadsgezichten 1550-1800. Topographische schilderijen van het Haagse Historisch Museum, Zwolle, 1991, pp. 192-7, no. 14, illustrated)
