Lot Essay

The lions are similar to a pair of lions in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Williamson, loc. cit.) which date from around 1200 AD and are from Southern Italy, possibly Apulia. Like these lions they would have supported columns on their backs and are carved from one block of marble. These lions, however, are in a better state of preservation; the facial details and the highly stylised mane and tail remain well-defined.
