Lot Essay

The present work is closely related to a painting of 1914 'Tipperary', which is in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London. Sickert's studio in Red Lion Square had a grand piano of which Sickert wrote to Miss Sands 'Chicken has been playing the Contes d' Hoffman while I have been painting her reflection at the piano'
