A VERY FINE PERCUSSION 1853 PATTERN THREE-BAND ENFIELD RIFLE with blued barrel rifled with three grooves and retaining its brass-mounted barrel-plug, blued adjustable back-sight calibrated to 900 yards, case-hardened border engraved dated lock engraved 'Enfield' and with 'V*R' crowned, figured walnut full stock, regulation brass mounts including butt-plate, trigger-guard and fore-end cap, blued barrel-bands and barrel-band springs, blued sling swivels, and original iron ramrod: in original fitted brass-mounted mahogany case (the front chipped, some compartments loose), the lid with brass escutcheon engraved 'Lord Panmure', lined in green baize and with some accessories including original blued socket bayonet in its original stitched black leather scabbard with lacquered brass mounts, blued combination tool incorporating main-spring clamp, worm, pricker and turnscrew, four packets of wood plug paper cartridges, each dated 1856 (one opened), and a packet of percussion caps, dated Sep. 1855, in exceptional condition throughout, Ordnance view and proof marks, dated 1856 39in. barrel

Lot Essay

Sold with the original register of 25 shots taken with the rifle for Lord Panmure at a range of 500 yards fired from a rest on July 17th, 1856 by Sergt. Baker R.N., all of which were hits on a target 12ft. square. The register also gives details of the rifle's specifications and the weather conditions

Fox Maule, second Baron Panmure, 11th Earl of Dalhousie (1801-1874) succeeded to the earldom of Dalhousie following the death of his cousin in December, 1860. He spent twelve years in the army retiring as a Captain from the 79th highlanders in 1831-2. From 1835 to 1837 he was liberal M.P. for Perthshire and was one of the under-secretaries of state from 1835 to 1841. He became secretary at war on 6 July, 1846 and remained in office until 6 February, 1852. In 1855, under Lord Palmerston, he again took office as secretary for war, and it was under his direction that the Crimean war came to an end
