Lot Essay

This pistol was not shipped until April 10, 1877, along with 69 other Colt Armys, to the prime New York City jobbers and dealers, Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. The very few other pistols from this shipment to have come to light all have similar scroll decoration (as used on only a few hundred pistols within the span of a few months in the year 1870), some with blue and some with full nickel finish. For further information on the Heavy Leaf Scroll, see R.L. Wilson, The Book of Colt Engraving, and Colt Engraving, each chapter IV
The Heavy Scroll is one of the least observed of all types of Colt engraving
