A CENTRAL ITALIAN SNAPHAUNCE PISTOL with two-stage barrel, fluted octagonal then polygonal (stamped signature erased) with a stepped ramp at the back of the breech, long engraved rectangular tang, earlier rounded lock engraved with scrolling foliage and berries, the arm of the steel chiselled as a monster's head, the cock held from the inside, moulded figured walnut full stock inlaid with a pierced and engraved iron panel around the barrel tang, incorporating an escutcheon engraved with a Pelican in its Piety, iron mounts including engraved spurred pommel with small chiselled grotesque mask cap, later(?) flat side-plate engraved with scrollwork, turned ramrod-pipes, and original horn-tipped ramrod, early 18th Century
