In September 1577 the Council of Lucca persuaded Ammanati to take on direction of the work on the Palazzo della Signoria. In this letter he recounts his decision to use pietra serena from Golfolina for the major part of the building and explains the difficulties that will follow in transporting it; the ponte della Cascine is too low for barges to pass when the river is full yet the stone gets spoilt if it is unloaded. If Caccini would order the timbers to be raised a little Ammanati offers to send a 'scarpelino' to assist.
