Lot Essay

This a typical drawing of circa 1872 when Greenaway was in the habit of using models she found on the street. A watercolour of similar size, date and technique entitled The Flower Girl is illustrated in R. Engen, op.cit facing p. 67. The model used in The Flower Girl was a watercress and violet seller from Islington.
