Lot Essay

Watercolours by Frith are rare, but there are similarities between this drawing and his pen and wash sketches which seem to warrant the attribution. The subject, essentially eighteenth-century but including a curious clover-footed figure who is almost classical (seated to the left of the chair), has not been identified.
