Lot Essay

The drawings are very similar in style to the work of John Byam Shaw (1872-1919), under whom the artist studied at the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art, established in Campden Street, Kensington, in 1910. She became a close friend of the Byam Shaw family and modelled for many of Byam Shaw's pictures, while her sister Ethel served as secretary to the Byam Shaw School. Their father was a judge, and their brother, Sir Edward Tindal Atkinson, became Director of Public Prosecutions
