BLAKE, William, Milton: Plate 38 [Albion on the Rock] (Bentley 118; Bindman 451a)
relief etching with white-line engraving, printed in black, with grey wash additions, ca. 1807-9, on wove paper, extremely rare (apart from the four complete copies of Milton all in public collection this is the only separate sheet recorded), with wide margins, a loss at the upper left sheet corner well away from the subject, slightly light-stained within the mount window, minor surface dirt in the margins and on the reverse

Provenance
Bentley suggests this may be the design from Milton sold by William Bell Scott; Sotheby's, 21 April 1885, lot 185 (1 guinea to Pincott). Scott's collector's stamp (L. 2607), encountered on other Blake sheets formerly in his collection, is not present here and this provenance suggestion should be treated with caution
