A Wedding Procession
Details
Ida Bagus Diding (Batuan, 1911 or 1914-1990)
A Wedding Procession
Wash technique and watercolour on paper, black ink framing lines, framed.
70 x 47.5 cm.
The present lot depicts a wedding in which the groom rides an elephant to the temple. At the upper right, an abduction is shown, with a priest meditating beyond. The scene is possibly a part of the Amad story, for in that Amad's brother Mohamad becomes King of Egypt (Mesir) and is so married to the former King's daughter, Ratna Kusuma. (For another episode of the Amad story, see also lot 2).
The artist was a member of the Pita Maha artists' association. Like many other painters from the Batuan School, Ngendon was the tutor of Diding. Diding met Spies and Bonnet, saw them at work, and showed them his work for their criticism. The layout of the composition of the present lot is reminiscent of that of Spies. The entrancing rhythm of Staffage and foliage enforces the surrealistic atmosphere, and seems to be in this example pushed to a maximum.
With various inscriptions on the reverse.
