Details
Ida Bagus Ketut Soenia (Geriah Poeseh, Sanur, ca. 1906-1990)
Tourist Market
Executed in, or before November 1936
Wash technique on paper, framed and glazed.
23 x 37 cm.
The artist was the spiritual teacher of Ida Bagus Poegoeg. He became a priest (pedanda Gede Oka Timbul) in Geria Poeseh in the 1960s, at which time he stopped working as a painter. Bateson & Mead collected thirteen works by the artist.
Whereas the appearance of Westerners or signs of modernisation in Balinese pre-war painting is highly unusual, in Sanur it seems to be a lesser taboo. Although early examples are very rare, subjects that give proof of the beginning of tourism and Westerners integrated are more frequently found in this region, for example in the post-war oeuvre of Ida Bagus Nyoman Rai (or Klingking). Also note that the woman in the upper right is Javanese and selling artefacts. Inscribed with the artist's name and the date on the reverse, probably by Bateson.
To be illustrated in a forthcoming book by Dr. A. Vickers: Balinese Painting; Mementoes, Diversions, Masterworks (1928-1942), (Pepin Press).
