Lot Essay

Mathieu Criaerd, maître in 1738.

The form and mounts of this commode echo those of a drawing by Bernard van Risenburgh in the State Archives, Munich (G.Hojer and H. Ottomeyer, Die Möbel der Residenz München, Munich, 1995, p.89). BVRB supplied the majority of the commodes ordered circa 1733 for the refurnishing of the Munich Residenz by Elector Charles-Albert of Bavaria (1697-1745).

An almost identical commode with a marquetry top was sold anonymously at Christie's New York, 21 October 1997, lot 150, while further a example with identical parquetry decoration, but stamped by Jacques Carel, was sold by Viscount d'Abernon in these Rooms, 26 June 1929, lot 118. The distinctive ormolu mounts, however, particularly the apron mount, are also recorded in the oeuvres of Hansen, Joseph, Genty and Migeon.
