Lot Essay

The zitan and hongmu on this piece have been carved to resemble stalks of bamboo. For a piece of similar overall design, but without the panels, see Tian Jiaqing, Classic Chinese Furniture of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1995, p. 121, no.43. The bamboo design of this chair is enhanced by the fine lacquering on the reverse of the chair panels. The style of the painted lacquer decoration on the backs of these chairs may be compared to that on an early Qing dynasty throne illustrated in Tian Jiaqing, op. cit., no. 53.
