A Pair of Black Lacquered Yumu Yokeback Armchairs, Guanmaoyi
Shanxi, 18th/19th century
The gently curved toprail of each elmwood "official's hat" armchair with swept-back projecting ends supported on the S-curved rectangular splat carved with a ruyi medallion flanked by the upper extensions of the rear legs forming the corner posts, the S-curve arms supported on complex lattice-like side posts and raised on goose-neck supports at the front, the rectangular seat frames with "ice-plate" edges enclosing a seat panel on top joined by aprons forming kunmen-shaped openings above stepped base stretchers and a footrest
