A Pair of Jichimu Southern Official's Hat Armchairs, Nanguanmaoyi
Suzhou, 17th century
Each with the humpback top rail continuing to rounded corner posts extending to the back legs below the rectangular frame with a soft mat seat, the backsplat comprising three sections, the upper panel with an opening encircled by a dragon biting its tail, the central panel plain and showing to advantage the well figured jichimu, the lower with an arching cusped aperture, the sinuous armrests continuing to the front corner posts, the legs joined by plain aprons and stepped stretchers, and the footrest supported on a narrow, plain apron

A huanghuali and nanmu burl chair of similar design formerly in the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture Collection, was sold in these rooms, 19 September 1996, and illustrated by Wang et al., Masterpieces from the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture, San Francisco and Chicago, 1995, pp. 68-9, no. 32. Curtis Evarts notes that the three-part splat with carved motifs, as seen on the present example, is a typical feature of late Ming period chairs.
