A Rare Painted Grey Pottery Figure of a Horse and Foreign Rider
Early Tang dynasty, 7th century
The powerful horse modeled with head raised and ears pricked forward, with a hogged mane and docked tail, the foreign rider wearing a long tunic, boots and a tied, fitted cap, looking off to the right with one hand held to his chest, the other positioned low to hold reins, his face modeled with prominent cheekbones and scowling expression, traces of red and white pigment

Wang Family Collection, pl. 58., has related this piece to a group of grooms excavated from a mid-Tang tomb outside Yangzhou in Jiangsu province, Kaogu, 1983:9, pp. 799-802, where the similarity of the faces, bodies and boots suggest that these figures belonged to a regional workshop.
