A. Juliano in Bronze, Clay and Stone: Chinese Art in the C.C. Wang Family Collection, pl. 58., has related this piece to a group of grooms excavated from a mid-Tang tomb outside Yangzhou in Jiangsu province, Kaogu, 1983:9, pp. 799-802, where the similarity of the faces, bodies and boots suggest that these figures belonged to a regional workshop.
