A Rare Carved Cizhou Vase, Yuhuchunping
Jin dynasty, 12th-13th century
The elegant pear-shaped body tapering to a slender neck rising to a flared mouth, carved through the thick brown glaze to the buff-colored body with a broad band of peony floral scroll set between a band of angular scroll above and a narrow band of incised foliate scrolls below, all under a clear glaze

Lot Essay

Compare a vase of similar profile with similar carving, but with fish amidst the foliate scrolls, illustrated in Sekai toji zenshu, vol. 13, Tokyo, 1955, p. 37, col. pl. 25. Another example was included in The Charles B. Hoyt Collection Memorial Exhibition, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1952, no. 306.
