A Rare Large Longquan Celadon Carved Bowl
Ming dynasty, Early 15th century
Heavily potted with rounded sides, the interior fluently carved with a large flowerhead in the center below a band of composite foliate scroll bearing eight blossoms, and a narrow band of lingzhi scroll at the rim, repeated on the exterior above an unusual band of different flower sprays and a band of flower-filled petal lappets, covered overall with a glaze of olive-green color continuing over the foot ring, an unglazed ring on the base burnt orange in the firing

Lot Essay

A Longquan celadon bowl of nearly identical large size and decoration is in the Topkapi Palace Museum and is illustrated by T. Misugi, Chinese Porcelain Collections in the Near East, vol. 2, Hong Kong, 1981, p. 241, T.141.
