George Viau (1852-1939) was one of the principle figures involved in the Impressionist movement. He was born in St. Petersberg where his father was a doctor at the Imperial Court. George Viau arrived in France aged 15 and decided to follow in his father's footsteps, he quickly built an illustrious career. He befriended the most important collectors of the period: the Dorias, the Rouarts and the Vevers. Viau became a client of Durand-Ruel and Le Barc de Bouteville, he strongly supported his friends, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Monet and frequently bought their work. In addition he was known to collect the work of Corot and Delacroix.
George Viau's greatest support went to his closest friends Louis Valtat, Georges d'Espagnat and Edouard Vuillard. Vuillard painted a portrait of Viau in which he shows his friend in a white medical coat before his vast medicine cabinet, in the background one can make out some Monet landscapes and a colourful Renoir nude.
The most important works in his collection were dispersed at auction in Paris in December 1942 and many are now in major museums and presigious collections, the remainder of the collection stayed within his family.
