Lot Essay

Lord Adolphus Fitzclarence (1802-1856) was the fourth natural son of William IV and Dorothy Jordan (1761-1816). He spent sixteen years in the navy and between 1846-53 served as ADC to Queen Victoria. Nicknamed 'Lolly' he lived for a time at Ivy Lodge, Richmond and was a devoted theatre-goer being involved in founding the Garrick Club. A portrait of him by Henry Wyatt, dressed as a Byronic corsair, hangs in Brooks' Club. On 5th October 1825 the Richmond Theatre put on a production of 'Der Freyschütz' or 'The Wild Huntsman of Bohemia'. A photostat of this playbill is included with the lot
