Mackintosh spent 14 and 16 April at Montreale where he was particularly impressed by the church of Santa Maria la Nuova. Its mosaics and the convent and cloisters had a profound impact upon him. He made several sketches there and at least one watercolour of the cloister, which impressed him by the variety of the carvings in the capital of the arcade.
