Lot Essay

Known in China as Ma Jun, 'soft Jun', is clearly related to the wares produced at the Jun kilns in Henan province. Very few examples of this rare ware appear to have been published, although an almost identical small vase is illustrated by J. Ayers, Chinese Ceramics: The Koger Collection, New York, 1985, p. 54, no. 32. Two vases of different forms but covered with a similar glaze accentuated with purple splashes are illustrated by R. L. Hobson, Chinese Pottery and Porcelain, New York, 1976 ed., pl. 39, figs. 1 and 2.
