Lot Essay

Under the Mongols foreign trade increased, bringing with it dynamic new ideas and inspiration, as well as a bold ornamental taste. Much of the porcelain production during the Yuan period was driven by the patronage of foreign markets and most of the blue and white wares produced were exported to the Middle East.

The decoration on this unusually large bowl, of a lotus pond on the interior and a band of scrolling lotus on the exterior, is a classic theme of Jingdezhen production in the mid-14th century. Sometimes ducks are included amidst the lotus and water weeds in the central medallion, as can be seen on a similar bowl, excavated at Jingdezhen, and illustrated by P. Hughes-Stanton and R. Kerr, Kiln Sites of Ancient China, An Exhibition lent by the People's Republic of China, Oriental Ceramics Society, London, 1980, pl. 243. Another example, but with a scrolling lotus band in the cavetto, is illustrated in Chinese Porcelain, The S. C. Ko Tainminlou Collection, Part I, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1987, pl. 1.
