An Unusual Inscribed Japanese Slip-Decorated Blue and White Brushpot
Dated by inscription (AD1808)
The thickly potted, cylindrical sides finely decorated in underglaze blue and raised white slip with flowering chrysanthemum stems, one continuing over the rim into the interior, all under a clear glaze of pale blue-green tint, the base painted in underglaze blue with inscriptions in Japanese and Chinese

Lot Essay

The Japanese inscription reads Nihon Bunka go nen tsuchinoe tatsu toshi, Fifth year of the Japanese Emperor Bunka, year of Tsuchinoe tatsu (1808). The parallel Chinese inscription reads: Da Qing Jiaqing shi san nian wuchen sui zhi zao, Made in the wuchen cycle (1808), 13th year of the Jiaqing Emperor of the great Qing Dynasty.
