Lot Essay

Bamboo as a decorative motif can be seen in jade carvings of the Northern Song and Jin dynasties. A pendant carved as a twisted cane of bamboo bearing three leaves and dated to the Northern Song dynasty is illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji, Gongyi meishu bian, 9, Yuqi, Beijing, 1986, p. 134, pl. 239. A related flat-backed ornament or appliqué carved as a ring with six lobes, excavated in 1974 outside of Beijing, and dated to the Jin dynasty, is illustrated in Zhongguo yuqi quanji, 3, Hebei, 1994, p. 105, pl. 161.
