A Small Pale Russet Jade Figure of a Hen
Song dynasty, 10th-13th century
Shown in a recumbent position, the head detailed with circular eyes, a comb and wattles, and the legs underneath carved in low relief on either side of the vertical channel drilled through the body, of pale russet color and with soft polish; together with a small blackish jade figure of a recumbent goose, Ming dynasty, with neck and head arched backwards

Lot Essay

A related figure of a hen carved from somewhat similar stone, also with a comb and wattles, and dated to the Song dynasty, in the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Washington DC, was included in the exhibition, Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1996, no. 105.
