Lot Essay

A native of Trinidad and the island's most accomplished nineteenth century artist, Cazabon was schooled in England from 1827-1830. His first pictures date to his return to Trinidad in 1830 prior to his departure to Paris to study art in 1837. He spent ten years in Europe, based in Paris, and exhibited French and Italian landscapes at the Salon between 1839 and 1847. The present picture is not listed amongst these works and appears to be an addition to his few recorded French landscapes, and one of the earliest surviving works by the artist.
