Browne sailed on the Alceste for China in December 1815 with Lord Amherst's embassy. The Alceste, whose complement included the embassy's artist William Havell, visited Rio de Janeiro for ten days on the outward journey. A collection of Browne's drawings are in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich and Royal Geographical Society, London. For a recent study of his work in Brazil, including his subsequent visits to Rio de Janeiro in 1818 and 1822, see L. de Lima Martins, O Rio de Janeiro dos Viagantes, O olhar britânico (1800-1850), Rio de Janeiro, 2001.
