Lot Essay

Barraud emigrated to New Zealand in 1849. A member of the English family of equestrian artists, he practised as a chemist in Wellington as well as painting New Zealand landscapes. He became president of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and published New Zealand: Graphic and Descriptive, including thirty-one chromolithographed plates in 1877.
