During the Crimean War, the Turkish garrison of the fortress at Kars -- assisted by General Sir W. Fenwick Williams of Kars -- was besieged by the Russian armies. Although the fortress was in a strong defensive position, the garrison was severely weakened by an outbreak of cholera, and Kars fell to the Russian army in November 1855 after an extended siege.
