Lot Essay

The present watercolours depict processions through the streets of Kanchipuram. The town was the capital of the Pallava kings and the in the late 8th century AD the Shaiva and Vaishnava temples of Kailasantha and Vaikunthaperumal were constructed, two of the most magnificent in Southern India. The watercolour was executed by a Tanjore school artist, probably working for a French patron.
