Rudolph Amandus Philippi (1808-1904)
Reise durch die Wueste Atacama auf Befehl der chilenischen regierung in Sommer 1853-54. Halle: Eduard Anton, 1860. 2 parts in one volume, large 4° (33.4 x 26.5cm.). Folding lithographic map, 27 lithographic plates after Philippi (12 tinted views [2 folding], 15 natural history plates [7 hand-coloured]). (Title spotted, six plates with spotting to image area, some light spotting, marginal in the main.) Original boards, printed title on upper cover within a decorative border, similar border on lower cover, letterpress title and date on backstrip (extremities scuffed, backstrip chipped at head and foot).
The first part concentrates on the journeys that Philippi made through the desert of Atacama with descriptions, views and notes on and plates of the animals to be found in the region. The second part (sub-titled Florula Atacamensis..) is on the flora of the region, with descriptions and plates. This second part is separately paginated and was also issued separately (see Stefleu & Cowan 7851).
Rudolph Amandus Philippi emigrated to Chile in 1851. He joined his brother Bernard, who was engaged on a scheme to colonize the country, and worked initially as a farmer and teacher, but from 1853 until 1874 was professor of botany and zoology in Santiago, and from 1897 director of the Museo Nacional de Chile.
