'Syria was Burckhardt's first stopping-place in the Levant. He spent three years in Aleppo studying Arabic in preparation for his African travels, and while resident there he travelled through Syria and the Holy Land. Burckhardt was the First European to visit Petra, in 1812...' Blackmer 237.
