A highly influential member of the Finnish avante-garde during the late 1940s and 1950s, Ilmari Tapiovaara worked briefly in Le Corbusier's office in Paris in 1937 before being called up for military service 1939-1944. In 1948 he participated in MoMA's 'Low-Cost Furniture Competition', and in 1952-53 was awarded a professorship at Chicago's prestigious Institute of Technology, teaching alongside Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. During the 1950s Tapiovaara was awarded three Gold Medals at the Milan Triennales, and continued throughout the decade to produce successful and popular designs for furniture, lighting, metalware and textiles.
