An English bone barleycorn pattern chess set, late 19th or early 20th century
Stained red and natural, the royal pieces with foliate baluster stems below waisted and knopped finials, the stems descending to spreading lobed bases, with a fitted oak box with inset brass vacant escutcheon to the cover, the kings -- 3¾in. (9.5cm.), the pawns -- 1 3/8in. (3.5cm.) high
