A PAIR OF VENETIAN ROCOCO POLYCHROME-PAINTED ARMCHAIRS
Mid 18th Century and redecorated
Each with a pierced cartouche form back centered with a carved shell above a pierced interlaced splat and a serpentine overupholstered seat covered in 18th Century floral woven silk and flanked by out-scrolled arms and supported on cabriole legs terminating in scrolled toes (2)

Examples of side-chairs similar in design to the present pair and dating from the mid-18th century are illustrated in G. Wannenes, Mobili d'Italia, Milano, 1984, p. 58 and G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile Veneziano del '700, Milan, 1927, plate CXLV.
A mid-18th century pair of similar side chairs were sold Sotheby's London, The Italian Furniture from the Estate of the Late Giuseppe Rossi, 10 March 1999, lot 121.
