Prior to his post as trainer for St. Bernard's F.C. in 1894 he had a successful career as an athlete. He joined Rangers F.C. as the club trainer in 1897 and held this position until his death in 1914. He also was trainer for the Scotland International side

Further details
The above shirt, in the Racing Colours of Lord Rosebery, which is lacking it's original badge is believed by the family of James Wilson to have been worn by a Scotland player in the match against England at New Hampden in 1906, the match which was played on 7th April ended in a 2-1 victory for Scotland
