PROPERTY OF A PRIVATE EUROPEAN COLLECTION
The property in the following six lots (168-173) was acquired directly from the artist. Several of these images appeared in the journal Minotaure during the 1930s. Lot 171 was also included in the landmark exhibition L'Amour Fou: Surrealism and Photography at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1985. This selection of images by Brassaï represents his more classic night views of Paris as well as his surrealist works which were widely published in Minotaure and Labyrinth and suggest his contribution to the avant-garde movements occuring in Paris in the 1930s.
For other works from this collection see Christie's, New York, 18 April 2001, lots 165-224.
