ELLIOTT ERWITT (BORN 1928)
PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF WILLIAM ROSSA COLE William Rossa Cole and Elliott Erwitt formed a lasting friendship in the early 1950s when Erwitt was just begining his career in New York. At the time Mr. Cole was the head of public relations at Knopf publishing house and had hired Erwitt to photograph authors for book jackets. After Erwitt moved to Philadelphia, the two men continued to correspond at which time the "Maquette for a limited edition book", lot 244, was created and given to Mr. Cole. In years to follow they kept in touch through various forms of correspondence. The following seven lots (243-249) represent gifts and greeting cards Erwitt sent to Mr. Cole throughout the late 1980s.
