The first cylindrical with flat circular rolled brim black-painted and centering on top in gold and red-paint 1756 and on the sides Northern Liberty No. 1 and the letters F.A. flanking a painted street hydrant; the second cylindrical with flat circular rolled brim red-painted and centering on top the letters J.F.F. and on the sides Germantown Hose 1 1848

Lot Essay

With its distinctive mark "F.A." on its upright, the Northern Liberties Fire Brigade hat was most likely associated with the Fire Association Company of Philadelphia, an insurance company whose symbol was the two letters flanking a street hydrant.
