Lot Essay

Both samplers in this lot are reminiscent of Quaker needlework associated with the New York area, and have a history of ownership in Hempstead, Long Island. In its linearity and reliance on repeated alphabetical banding, the sampler illustrated here evokes the simplicity of work associated with the Nine Partners School in Dutchess County, New York.
