Lot Essay

This view of Dover Plains, Dutchess County, New York was painted after Asher B. Durand's original done in 1848, now at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Durand's paintng was engraved by James Smillie, and prints of Dover Plains were distributed to members of the American Art-Union in 1850. This painting is accompanied by a framed original print engraved by James Smillie and issued by the American Art-Union.
