Lot Essay
Jacobsen painted six versions of the Great Western, one in 1911, three in 1916 and two in 1917. Of the three completed in 1916, one is an oil sketch and two are completed oils. Like the two other ship portraits illustrated in lots 50 and 51, the Fidelia and the Columbia, the Great Western was a fully rigged ship of the Black Ball Line, and was built by William H. Webb. She sailed out of New York City from 1851 to 1882. See Sniffen, Antonio Jacobsen: The Checklist (New York, 1984), pp. 136-137.
