Lot Essay

Inspired by the designs of classical antiquity, this elaborate sofa is closely related to the work of Anthony Quervelle (1789-1856) and may be from the shop of this Philadelphia artisan or one of his close competitors. Related sofas include a privately owned example, which also includes a crest rail with serpents centering a tablet, reeded "S" shaped arms, and a spaced double rosette above animal form feet (see Smith, "The Furniture of Anthony G. Quervelle, Part V" Antiques (March 1974), p. 512.
