Lot Essay

This table has affinities to a number of pedestal tables made by or attributed to the shop of Anthony Quervelle, and may be from his shop. If so, it is likely from the latter part of his career, and probably dates from the 1840s. The unusual scrolled feet recall foot designs of the mid-18th century, and suggest that this table was perhaps made at the beginning of the Rococo Revival period. Further evidence of an 1840s date for the table is the pedestal, which is suggestive of the Gothic Revival style, and which was not popularized in America until the 1840s. Related tables include one formerly in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art (Elder III and Stokes, American Furniture 1680-1880 From the Collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art (Baltimore, 1987), cat. no. 135) and three privately owned tables (see Smith, "The Furniture of Anthony G. Quervelle Part II: The Pedestal Tables", Antiques (July 1973), figures 2, 4, 5 and plate III.)
