Cartier : The Indian Style
In the mid-20th century Indian rulers were exclusively interested in Parisian jewelers and had no hesitation in handing over their family treasures for reworking in fashionable European Style. Cartier was the most prominent of them and established an international reputation of dealing with Indian jewelry or creating Indian style jewelry.
In the meantime, India's traditional enamel jewelry with carved gemstones became something of a craze in Europe and inspired famous French jewelry houses to create jewelry with an Indian flare.
There were also special orders, from both western and Indian clients, in which the client's own Indian pieces were mounted by Cartier. Cartier created a new mounting for existing Indian jewels so they could be worn in a more fashionably western way.
